3 Things You Can Do to Start Sleeping Better Today

July 15th, 2016 · No Comments

If you’re tired of feeling exhausted, fighting headaches, and experiencing distress due to poor sleep, here’s what you can do today to start enjoying more restful nights.

  1. Diet: A healthy diet comprised of a variety of whole foods will go a long way toward helping you fall asleep at night. Foods rich in beneficial vitamins and minerals like bananas, cherries, salmon, kiwi, brazil nuts, and eggs will provide nutrients that stabilize your sleep cycle. Avoid foods with high sugar content and alcoholic beverages within one hour before you go to sleep because these substances can disrupt your REM cycle and make you feel tired when you wake up.
  1. Routine: Instead of relying on one alarm to wake you up in the morning, use a two alarm system: one to tell you when to go to bed, and the other to help you wake up. A set bedtime will help your body adjust to a stable sleep cycle so you might not even need that AM alarm! For the first few days you will be in an adjustment period, so try to get out of bed right away in the morning to help your body get used to the new routine. To make going to bed more enjoyable, find the mattress that provides you with the most comfort. That way you’ll look forward to going to bed at night!
  1. Relax: Rather than watching TV at night, try to spend time reading or taking a hot bath to help you prepare for sleep. Lavender scented pillow spray can help your mind calm down, as will caffeine free tea like chamomile. Your body also responds positively to a cooler room temperature at night, so a fan can keep you cool and will also help by providing white noise.

Establishing healthy habits that lead to better sleep requires time and commitment, but in the long run it will help you be more productive and happy during the day. The sooner you implement these habits, the sooner you’ll feel the benefits from a better night’s sleep!

Solve Clutter Issues Once and For All

July 1st, 2016 · No Comments

Every home has spots where clutter tends to collect. However, with just a few simple changes, you can create a system that makes organization easy. So next time someone decides to drop by, you won’t have to worry about piles that need sorting or dirty laundry that needs put away before they arrive. Here are solutions for three common clutter sites in your home:

1.) The Entryway

For many families, the entryway is a gathering spot for shoes, hats, wallets, mail, and more. Instead of a more traditional console table, look for one with plenty of drawers and shelves. Designate spots for mail, keys, accessories, and other knick-knacks that you need when you leave your house. This way you can quickly put everything in it’s very own spot when you’re doing a quick clean-up before company comes over.

2.) The Kitchen Counter

If you use your kitchen everyday, chances are you try to keep all of your cooking supplies as accessible as possible. Instead of storing everything on the countertops, use shelves and hooks to hang them within reach. Spices can be kept on top of the shelves, and oven mitts, spatulas, dishtowels, and even small cutting boards can be hung from hooks underneath.

3.) The Bedside Table

When you wake up in the morning, the last thing you want to deal with is an unorganized and overcrowded nightstand. Small baskets on the floor can be used to store books and magazines, while catch-alls on top of the table can help you keep track of jewelry and watches. Nightstands with built-in charging stations will also make it easy to charge all your electronics overnight so your phone and tablet are ready to go in the morning.

With summer savings going on now, you can save 25% with cash, check, or credit card, or you can get up to 60 months special financing*. These savings will go a long way to helping you organize your home and prevent clutter from piling up. You’ll always be ready to welcome guests and enjoy the time you spend with them!

3 Common Decorating Mistakes Every Rookie Makes

June 20th, 2016 · No Comments

With over sixty years in the furniture business, we’ve learned a lot about home decor. These are some of the easiest mistakes to make, especially if you’re new to interior design.

Living Room Seating

When you’re arranging your living room, you might be tempted to push some or all of your seats up against the walls. However, that’s probably the last thing that you want to do. Create a warm space where friends and family can talk to each other with furniture arranged around a single focal point, not spread out in every corner of the room. If you watch TV in the living room, face the sofa or sectional towards your TV and let the other pieces of furniture circle around it. That way you’ll be able to enjoy the room to the fullest!

Lighting

Most designers recommend that any room have at least three sources of lighting instead of a single overhead light. Use varying heights with table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces, and track lighting to create the proper mood for each room.

Painting Before Decorating

We highly recommend putting down that paintbrush until you’ve chosen the upholstery and fabric for your biggest pieces of furniture. It’s much easier to match your paint colors to upholstery than the other way around. Look through samples and ask our staff to help you pair textures and patterns, then decide which paint colors will bring them all together.

Everyone has a unique style, and every home should reflect the personalities of the people in it. However, these tips can help you avoid common mistakes that make homes feel cold and uncoordinated. Our talented staff can also help you transform your home and make your style come to life.

How to Create an Eye-Catching Room

June 6th, 2016 · No Comments

When our designers are working on a new project, they like to keep track of the height of every piece of furniture and accessory they consider. This allows them to utilize all of the height available to them in each space, and also creates a visually pleasing look that helps eyesight travel up and down a room rather than simply side to side.

Artwork

If you’re hanging a single piece of artwork, it’s best to hang it so that the center of the piece is right at eye level (about 57” for the average height). However, you can create an art gallery that groups multiple paintings at varying heights along a single wall or hallway. One interesting way to draw attention up is to hang three or more pieces of the same shape in a vertical line. You can do this on each side of a tall headboard to make your bedroom seem larger, or create an accent wall elsewhere.

Mirrors

Mirrors are one of the best tools in a designer’s arsenal because they reflect light (which makes the space brighter) and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You can even add metallic accents or geometric patterns with unique frames and patterns. Since mirrors are slightly different than artwork, they can be hung much higher than the average painting. Use large mirrors above tall dressers (which can be beautiful as well as practical) to draw the eye line even higher. Also, a mirror in the entryway is always a good idea so you can make sure everything is in place before you leave your home.

Accessories

To add the finishing touches, look for accessories that vary in height as much as the rest of the room. That way you can use tall candle sticks or vases to fill in places without much height and you can use short plants and lamps where artwork climbs high up the walls. Tall trees (or faux trees) are also perfect making lonely and bare corners look vibrant.

One way to decide whether one of your rooms could use more height variation is by looking at it through your camera’s lens. Take a picture of the room and see if it looks as balanced and thought out as the pictures you see in magazines on online. If you’re struggling, bring your photo with you and we’ll help create a beautifully designed room with you.

Does Your Dining Room Measure Up?

May 16th, 2016 · No Comments

When you’re considering buying new dining room furniture, it’s always important to know how much space you have for your new purchases. However, it’s also important to consider how much space you need to leave empty so people can maneuver around your home comfortably. Here’s a list of measurements to keep in mind while shopping for the perfect new dining room set:

  1. Make sure to leave 24-36 inches between the back of a chair and a wall. If your family is especially tall, you may way to leave a few more inches of clearing space. This way everyone will have enough space to pull out their chair and sit comfortably without truly feeling backed up against a wall.

  1. The most comfortable distance between dining chairs are 12-18 inches. This will prevent elbows from knocking into each other while your family and guests are enjoying their meal!

  1. If you’re mixing and matching dining room collections, make sure that there is at least 10 inches of space between the table top and the seat cushions. The last thing that you want is for someone to be unable to fit their legs under the table!

  1. Area rugs should be large enough that the entire table and all of the chairs can fit comfortable on top of it, even when the chairs are pulled out. This will ensure that there are no uneven surfaces causing the table and chairs to wobble while everyone is sitting down for their meals.

If all of this is a little overwhelming, never fear! Our incredibly savvy designers are always ready to help make sure that you’re making all the right decisions about your new furniture. They’ll make sure your home looks amazing and is perfectly functional as well! Plus they will make sure that you’re getting the best deals on the best brands. Visit today!
